The Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellowship Programme (MSCFP) aims to increase the number of women in the nuclear field by fostering a diverse workforce of men and women who contribute to and drive worldwide scientific and technical innovation.
The Marie Sklodowska-Curie Programme, named after the pioneer physicist and twice Nobel Prize laureate Marie Sklodowska-Curie, aims to inspire and encourage young women to pursue a career in the nuclear field by providing highly motivated female students with scholarships for Master’s programmes and the opportunity to pursue an internship facilitated by the IAEA.
Selected candidates are awarded scholarships to pursue Master’s degrees in nuclear-related disciplines at authorized universities. They are also given the opportunity to participate in an IAEA-facilitated internship for up to 12 months.
Scholarships are given to around 100 students each year, depending on the availability of funding. The topic of research, as well as geographic and linguistic diversity, are all taken into account.
The value of women in science
Scientific advancements have provided hitherto inconceivable benefits to the planet. In the late 1800s, Marie Sklodowska-Curie’s pioneering work on radioactivity enabled us to harness the power of the atom, resulting in numerous advantages to humanity.
Maintaining a qualified workforce to promote innovation and productivity is becoming increasingly important as the world faces pressures from a changing climate, growing populations, food shortages, and increased energy consumption. Nuclear research can assist countries in addressing several of these difficulties, and the demand for qualified experts in this field is significant and will continue to expand.
In order to fulfill its unique purpose of accelerating and expanding the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, the IAEA is at the forefront of research and technology transfer and relies on a stable pool of qualified technical personnel. Women must be included in this workforce.
Women, on the other hand, are underrepresented in the nuclear profession. They frequently face challenges to entry and advancement in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) beginning in elementary school. The Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellowship Programme aims to encourage more women from all across the world to pursue careers in nuclear science. The Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellowship Programme develops gender-balanced capacities in nuclear energy, other nuclear applications, nuclear safety, and nuclear security, as well as other fields.

Introduction
The Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellowship Programme (MSCFP) of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) aims to encourage and support young women who want to work in the nuclear area.
To that purpose, the MSCFP offers scholarships to chosen students pursuing a Master’s degree in nuclear-related areas, as well as IAEA-facilitated internship opportunities.
Criteria for Eligibility :
- Students from IAEA Member States who meet the following entry conditions are eligible for the IAEA MSCFP:
- Candidates who are female;
- Accepted or enrolled in a Master’s program in a nuclear-related subject at an authorized university.
- Applicants with above-average academic qualifications (75% or higher or GPA more than 3.0 out of 4.0) will be given preference.
Subjects of study
The program provides financial assistance to young women studying in nuclear-related fields relevant to the IAEA’s work to advance the safe, secure, and peaceful applications of nuclear science and technology, such as nuclear engineering, nuclear physics and chemistry, nuclear medicine, isotopic techniques, radiation biology, nuclear safety, nuclear security, non-proliferation, and nuclear law.

In addition to the completed online application form, the following documents are required:
- Passport/National ID photocopy
- Official university acceptance/admission letter into the Master’s program identifying the nuclear-related field of study and duration of the program
- Tuition fee statement/confirmation of tuition costs
- TWO referees sent completed reference forms directly to MSCFP@iaea.org (get the form here).

The selection procedure
The IAEA MSCFP Technical Selection Committee evaluates applications based on MSCFP selection criteria such as the applicant’s entry requirements, educational background and prior achievements, motivation, and the impact of the fellowship on the applicant’s career goals and commitment to public service. Geographic, academic, and linguistic variety are all taken into account.
The decision will be emailed to all candidates.
MSCFP honor
Students are awarded up to €20,000 for tuition and up to €20,000 for living expenses for the Master’s program.
Obligations
The shortlisted applicants will be contacted with an offer and asked to confirm their acceptance of the fellowship within one week. The offer will include information about the award details, such as payment mode, required commitment, and administrative requirements and procedures.
